Finalising finance accounts for our year 12 students.
For many of you it might be hard to believe your students are now in the final phase of their secondary education and will complete and graduate from Year 12 at our school in a few short weeks! The memories of their first day of high school are still fresh for many of us. As our students transition from high school students into members of our wider community, it is important we ensure they finish well, strong, happy and excited about the future. There are a number of staff who are ready to help and support both your student and / or you as their families, succeed at this important milestone. The formal was a wonderful example of the fine young people we have taught this year. We aim to get everyone to the Graduation and for every student to obtain their QCE or QCIA. In saying this, please reach out if you or your students need any extra support over the last few weeks; we are here for them, right to the last day and beyond if needed.
Please support the school by finalising any outstanding SRS or subject fees / uniform payments or other debts as soon as possible. Our finance office staff are ready to help you settle these accounts and / or establish payment plans so that these matters are finalised by the end of Semester 2. Year 12s need to please promptly return their BYOD before the last day.
At Caboolture, our vision is for all students to achieve a quality education at our school, that enables them to articulate into meaningful employment, further training or tertiary study. I set the bar high in terms of my expectations on attendance, participation, uniform and behaviour, so that our vision can become a reality for all members of our school community. I will encourage and challenge every one of our students to:
- move into the last term of 2020 with pride, enthusiasm and commitment to learning;
- take on student leadership, coaching and/or mentor roles within our student body;
- make the best contribution they possibly can to our school community;
- explore all the educational possibilities and curriculum options available to them;
- embrace difficult challenges as opportunities to grow and develop; and
- think seriously about what career options they are interested in.
I invite you all to join us in our work at Caboolture State High School to help us bring our values to life in our school community:
Persistence – never give
up
Respect – respect yourself, others and the
environment
Integrity – be honest and trustworthy
Diligence – give everything a go
Excellence – be the best you can be
Great start for term 4 and preparations for 2021
Congratulations to our parents, staff and students on a smooth and calm start to Term 4! Our first week of learning was great with staff and students quickly falling back into our routines. A warm welcome to both our new and returning families. Our enrolment remains strong and we have successfully commenced approximately 1400 students for the final term of the year. If you have a Year 6 student in a local primary school who you haven’t enrolled yet with us for Year 7 in 2021, please contact the office staff who will make you an appointment with one of our Deputy Principals.
Facilities update
Work on our new Double Court Hall will commence before the end of Term 4. Check out the plan below to see what the new learning spaces will look like!
We are also in the planning phase for some new senior Manual Arts workshops and two new junior kitchens as well as some more upgrades to our staff accommodation.
BYOD (Bring your own device) in 2021
Over the last few years, the school has tried a number of different approaches to integrating technology into the learning. Most students have a phone or access to a laptop or computer and can access social media and the Internet as they want or need to. In 2020, we redeveloped our BYOD approach as COVID – 19 impacted on how we deliver curriculum. In 2021 we have been lucky enough to be invited to be part of the trial of the new QLearn Learning Management System (LMS). This is an online platform for both staff and students. Every student will continue to need to bring a laptop. We have developed a number of options for our families, details of which are on our website. There will be more communication to parents about this via email.
Showcase Awards
This year our school submitted two applications for Showcase Awards and I am very proud to confirm that we received both a regional and state award:
Kind Regards

Sleep is like food for your brain
Getting enough sleep is important for your physical and mental wellbeing
Sleep lets your mind recharge and process information. It’s the only part of the day that your body gets to rest and repair.
Sleep can help you feel better, think more clearly and concentrate better. It gives you energy to complete tasks and can make you more alert.
Without enough sleep you may have problems with thinking, concentrating, memory, reaction times and mood.
Teens need between 9 and 10 hours of sleep each night to function best, although for some, 8 hours is enough!
The power of sleep
It may feel like nothing much goes on when you’re asleep, but the mind and body are working hard. This hard work means benefits like:

Diverse Learners Transition
The transition from primary to secondary school is a significant step in a child’s education and we are making every effort to ensure the transition for our prospective Year 7 students is seamless and as smooth as possible. On Monday (Week 3), we welcomed our Diverse Learners to Caboolture State High School. These students will participate in multiple transition visits to prepare them for the different academic and social expectations of junior secondary school. Students enjoyed a tour of our school grounds exploring a Science lab, the tuckshop, library, bus stop, administration and student counter, JD building and most excitingly the agricultural farm. The students enjoyed meeting the animals at the farm, and feeding the chickens.

We have another 3 visits with our Diverse Learners. Students will engage in a range of learning activities in new subjects they experience at high school including Manual Arts, Home Economics and Art. Students will also explore our timetable, meet our support staff and continue to explore various areas of the school.

We look forward to seeing our prospective Year 7 students at Caboolture State High School soon.

Learning Enhancement
Fly it Red for Dyslexia
Our Learning Enhancement students had a great time last Thursday making and then flying red paper airplanes in support of Dyslexia awareness month.
Each year, October is recognised worldwide as Dyslexia Awareness Month, a time to come together to raise awareness, share resources, and tell stories about dyslexia successes. During Dyslexia Awareness Month, Go Red is a campaign to promote a greater understanding of dyslexia. Go Red is a global community of passionate individuals, companies, schools and organisations. They're on a mission to reclaim the colour RED. The red marker is used to highlight the mistakes with work that is all too familiar for dyslexics around the world. Dyslexia groups have chosen red in order to take back its meaning and globally promote dyslexia awareness in a fun and positive way.
ICAS Competitions
Twenty students participated in ICAS competitions over the month of August. Certificates have arrived in the school and will be awarded to students on the Year 7, 8, 9 assembly in Week 8.
Preparing to Leave School
It’s hard to believe that our Year 12 students are preparing to leave school in only a few short weeks!
The National Careers Institute (NCI) has launched the School Leavers Information Kit and the School Leavers Information Service - a new targeted support package for young people helping to tackle the uncertainty around leaving school and choosing the right career pathway.
The information kit includes information around further study options, resume writing, interview preparation, industry and job information in Australia and a dedicated phone service that has been set up for school leavers to access.
The School Leavers Information Kit Your Career: What’s next for you? is available on the Your Career website at YourCareer.gov.au , or download here
The School Leavers Information Service is available by calling 1800 227 337 or emailing schoolleavers.nci@dese.gov.au.

Year 10 Clowning Performance
Late in Term 3, our talented Year 10 Drama students from Mrs Bell’s and Mrs Taylor’s classes entertained a live audience with performances of their clowning skits. Students devised their clowning routines during class time for assessment and were then able to invite their families and younger brothers and sisters to come along on the night to see them perform in full costume and make-up under our brand new lighting system in P Block. There were plenty of laughs from both the children and adults and this was really encouraging for our students.
Mrs Free and Mr Shevelling made their debut performance when they were invited up to the stage by the students to participate in their performances. Thank you to families, friends, and staff who supported our students on the night and a huge thank you must go to Mrs Bell, Mrs Taylor, and Mr Heidke who provided this opportunity for the students and worked with them to make the night a success!

Junior Secondary School
Term four is flying by, and has been a busy time for our junior students. Year 7s have shown their leadership as ambassadors for the Caboolture East Year 4 Farm Visit and have another opportunity at end of term, Year 6 Orientation Day.
The Year 8s have been busy applying for Junior Secondary Leadership roles and there is an abundance of outstanding applications.
We have had an overwhelming response from the Year 9s to be Triple SSS leaders working with the new Year 7s in 2021. The applicants will also have an opportunity to highlight their leadership skills when they collaborate with Caboolture East Active Leaders and run a team building and leadership event later in the term.
Mrs Linda Hooper
Head of Department - Junior Secondary
From the Desk of the Year 7 Deputy Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
It is hard to believe that we are half way through Term 4. Our Year 7 have grown and matured over the year and the Year 7 team were very proud of our students who received Academic awards and Sports awards last week. Congratulations.
ATTENDANCE – EVERY DAY COUNTS
Over the past four weeks, we have been focusing on attendance. We have been talking to our Year 7s about being “on time” for class and coming to school every day.
Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day. Attending and participating in school will help your child develop:
- important skills and knowledge to help them learn
- social and emotional skills such as good communication, resilience and team work.
Children who attend school every day and complete year 12 have:
- better health
- better job opportunities
- higher income across their lives.
There is no safe number of days for missing school. Each day a student does not attend school puts them behind.
Under Queensland law, you must make sure your child of school age is enrolled and attends school all day, every school day unless they have an acceptable reason. Illness, doing work experience or competing in a school sporting event are acceptable reasons for being absent from school.
Avoid keeping your child away from school for: birthdays, shopping, visiting family and friends, if they sleep in, looking after other children, minor check-ups or care such as haircuts. Organise routine medical or other health appointments, if possible, before, after school, or during the school holidays.
TIPS TO HELP IMPROVE YOUR CHILD’S ATTENDANCE
- Talk to your child about school and how important it is to attend every day. You can ask them how they feel about school, what they like and if there are any problems.
- have a set time to do homework and go to bed.
- leave all technology out of their bedroom
- pack their school bag the night before with everything they need
- have a set time for breakfast
- plan to meet up with a friend so they can travel to school together.
If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can help.
TEEN MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COURSE
Over the next four weeks, all Year 7s will be participating in the Teen Mental Health First Aid Course. Last week, parents/carers should have received an email with information about the content of the course. Below is an overview of the course:
“The teen Mental Health First Aid courses are for high school students in Years 7-9 and 10-12. Students will learn how to provide mental health first aid to their friends. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.
Mental illnesses often start in adolescence or early adulthood and it is important to detect problems early to ensure the young person is properly treated and supported”.
The course is delivered by our Guidance Officer - Ross Palmer and me (both trained facilitators) and supported by their House Group teachers.
Enjoy the rest of the term,
Mrs Lee-Ann King
Deputy Principal – Year 7 and Inclusion

World Teachers’ Day
The Year 7 house group captains demonstrated their leadership by running their first assembly in front of their cohort. They helped congratulate students who received awards for cross country, transition ambassadors and house challenges. Captains also created a World Teachers’ Day video to thank the AMAZING staff of CSHS. They assisted in handing out yummy smart cookies made by Ms McBride’s Year 11 hospitality class.

Resource Centre and Library
It would be easy to have a half-glass-empty view of 2020: we’ve grappled with the impacts of COVID in our own lives (though we’ve been very lucky here in Qld); teaching and learning has been seriously disrupted; and we’ve experienced one of those waves of retirements that happen periodically in education that has left palpable gaps in the cultural fabric of our school.
As I think of 2020, though, more than anything, I’m thankful: thankful for knowing these wonderful staff members, and thankful for Mrs John and our Library Assistants who have constantly gone above and beyond their roles to help us get through a pretty tough year.
From a staffing side of things, there are none who will be missed more than Marlene Brand, the library guru who has been with the school since 1992 and the library since 1994. I’ll make no bones about it, losing Marlene from the library team is like losing a family member. She’s been part of the place for as long as I’ve been a part of the school: 26 years of dedicated service, 26 years of putting staff first, 26 years working long hours way beyond what was required of her because there was a job to do or someone to help. Over that time, in my annual magazine report, I’ve referred to her as the best stage manager ever, the leading lady of our show, the Library CEO, my second mate, my friend. And while all of that is true, it just can’t do justice to all that she has given to the library and to the school.
As we do tributes, it’s appropriate to mention all those other long-serving staff members who, in 2019 – 2020, have either retired (or are planning to) or have left for other pastures. For over a decade, they have given so much to the school:
- Dianna Mellino and Mark Kalms: collectively the heart and soul of the
school.
- For 33 years, Kalmsy has brought so much joy into our lives and has been responsible for staff morale that has been the envy of other schools far and wide.
- As far as Dianna is concerned, she lives and breathes this place and even post retirement, she continues to work unpaid in the School Archives … 33 years of service and still going! - Shane Keehn: Shane’s Caboolture High legacy began in 1979. Having taught some 4000 students and having worked with hundreds and hundreds of staff members, a greater legacy across the classroom, Commerce and Business, Legal Studies, Social Science, basketball, musicals, stage management and student council is difficult to imagine.
- Lina Bishop and Dianne Lee: the heart and soul of our Tuckshop for well over 20 years.
- Madonna Sims: long standing teacher aide supporting teachers and students for decades.
- Fay Jones: keeping the school clean for 20+ years.
- Kathy Kerr: the VocEd and Work Placement guru serving this place since 1995.
- Fabiana Everitt: supporting students for as long as I can remember.
- So, so many amazing long-serving teachers who have made such a difference within their faculties and beyond - Angela Atkins, Carolyn Bradley, Kelly Clark, Jan D’Arcy, Maryanne Christie, Dave Hughes, Kerry McLean, Kaye Pedwell and Graham Robinson.
And that’s just those who left in 2019… go back a year and we can add Graham Everett, Carmel Harman and Peter Ryan to the list! There may well be more.
So how do you fill the gaps? From a library point of view, we’ve been blessed. Tania John has capably looked after both the Book Room side of things and many of Marlene’s jobs and my wonderful Library Assistants have rallied and pitched in too. My particular thanks to my new book coverers and stampers and also to my only Year 12 Library Assistant, Tamika Reitner, who has worked with us for four years.

Behind the scenes, Doreen (our awesome cleaner); Peter (the school’s ever-helpful Facilities Officer); Sue, Eric and Bruce from ICT; Rob (our advocate from Admin); Brian (Business Services) and so many of the office ladies and teacher aides have all been wonderful (as usual).
And then finally – but by no means last – there are the students who, against the odds, have made the year a half-glass-full one: the readers, the studiers, the assignment doers, the gamers and so many more who make the library a special place to be, every day. Thank you.

How clowns helped me to love reading
I can still remember the day my Aunt introduced me to Enid Blyton. Auntie Jo was still in high school and living at home with my grandparents and she had so many books! Come to the Circus was one of the first Enid Blyton books I read. It was the first in a series of three books about the circus written in the 1930s. I loved the circus series. The books described the excitement of being a child in a circus and travelling from town to town in beautiful wooden wagons with kindly circus folk. It was a bit of a perfect world where the clowns were always very silly and funny and every story had a happy ending.
I didn’t realise it at the time of course but all of the extra reading I was doing at home helped to improve my vocabulary, expand my general knowledge and improved my writing skills. Before long I’d moved from the bottom reading group to the top group. I made my way through all of Enid Blyton’s books and found Roald Dahl and then I began searching for more. More books!
The librarian at my school and town libraries knew me well by then and accepted that I was a regular who would scour the shelves for my latest discovery. I fell in love with so many wonderful authors and made so many friends in the characters of their books. I became Anne of Green Gables, Trixie Beldon and Nancy Drew. I was the heroine of the story. In fact I began to judge books not by their cover but by how many associated books were in the series. It was rare that I would pick a stand-alone book to read. There was nothing more exciting than to discover a new book with twenty four related books sitting beside it!
Once I was in high school I read historical novels that were well above my years and comprehension, such as Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and Vanity Fair by William Thackeray. Sometimes the subject matter was very heavy going, and so was the book itself! But, you know what? I’m so grateful to Enid Blyton and her idyllic stories because they got me reading and because of books I have learned so much about the world and myself. Simply put, reading is how I learn and I love it.

News Just in from the DLH
September marked the announcement that our school has been named as the 2020 State Winners of the Showcase Award for Excellence in Schools in Inclusion, Building Literate Futures. This achievement recognises the considered efforts both teachers and non-teaching staff of Caboolture State High dedicate to building increasing literate capacity for our students with a verified disability, which underlines the department’s Every student with disability succeeding plan (2018). This year, being our first Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools nomination, it was a mighty feat to claim this award, demonstrating the staff at Caboolture State High are ensuring a life of choice, not chance for all our students.
USC World Teacher’s Day competition
To celebrate World Teachers’ Day this year, USC asked the community to nominate an outstanding teacher at their school. Our own DLH teacher, Gaye Inall, was the winner. Congratulations to Gaye Inall (Deaf Teacher of the Deaf) who was nominated for her instrumental work in developing and teaching Australian sign language (AUSLAN) as a Languages subject at CSHS. This award demonstrates her passion and the amazing work she performs daily with our Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students and their education here at CSHS.
Dress Up for Book Week and Daniel Morcombe Foundation
The DLH team showed their true school spirit and dressed up for Book Week. Our costumes were bright and colourful with a Hawaiian theme of ‘Lilo & Stitch’. This was an important event as it raised funds for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation as well as entertain the students.
Containers for change program
This semester, our senior students have been participating in containers for change program, placing collection points around the school for eligible containers. So far they have managed to collect and sort numerous containers aiming to raise funds for the community.
One of the first organisations to receive a donation of $50 was the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. In recognition of our senior students’ efforts, our school organiser for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, Jen Kelly, proudly received their donation as well as Mrs Free (Principal), Mr Chris Gibbs (class teacher), and Ms Paula Good (HOSES).

Industrial Technology
Well what a year it has been. 2020 has been an extraordinary experience for the students and staff of CSHS and will be remembered for its many ups and downs for years to come. Being a practically based subject area, our Industrial Technology (ITD) classes required new and innovative modes of delivery if they were going to meet the challenges posed by home-schooling during Covid conditions.
Luckily our ITD staff were ahead of the game and had already begun to implement One Note to centralise resources and complement our theoretical components in 2019. As a result, our junior and senior students had access to resources and modified assessment tasks throughout Covid and together we collectively learned how to best utilise these platforms moving forward. All ITD students had access to subject materials online and we all did our best to bridge the gap and support our students.
Compounding Covid challenges, we had our first Year 12 cohort completing their senior studies under the new ATAR system. Our ITD staff did an amazing job supporting these senior students throughout the year also, supporting students online where required and donating countless hours to assist our Year 12s in workshops to catch up on practical assessments. We all made it through somehow with some fantastic success stories, wonderful achievements and even a few side projects around the school.

2021 is set to unveil more challenges and opportunities again as we begin offering new senior vocational education subjects. Watch this space and thanks again to all the ITD staff and students for rising to the challenges of 2020!
Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy a well-deserved break everyone!!

Sports News
Term 3 was an exceptional term for sports with many teams and individuals proudly representing Caboolture SHS across various competitions. However, this term we have found just as much success, if not more. As a school and community, we have not given up on sports this year. Instead, we exemplify the values we preach and persisted with most of our annual sporting events. Behind the leadership of our Head of Department Chris Little and the amazing support from our administration led by Ms Fiona Free, we did not just survive with sports in 2020, but thrived. Justin Hodges 9 a side
One week later on 30 October, our boys took to the field and competed at this year’s 2020 Justin Hodges 9 a side Rugby League competition. Although we did not place, the boys all came back as champions in our eyes, as they all showed our PRIDE values all the way. The proudest moments as a coach is not winning but seeing your team empty the gas and throw 110%. Seeing our boys battered, bruised with most barely walking off the bus was a proud moment of 2020; because they were signs that our boys threw and left everything they had on the field.
Thank you to Mr Cranwell, Mr Cantrill, Mr Window and Mr Hagland for your efforts with the boys today. Also, a special mention to our student coaches Kayla Anderson, Grace Giampino and Bianca Dunbar. All participants will be recognised for their efforts during their year level assemblies.

2020 Queensland Junior School Cup – Volleyball
Following success at this year’s metropolitan finals, our Year 7 – 8 Volleyball team entered the inaugural state volleyball competition on the Gold Coast this year. This team were heavy underdogs against private schools with excellence programs. This team not only represented before the state our PRIDE values but exceeded expectations in achievement by winning Bronze and placing 3rd in Queensland! Queensland school cups consist of the best teams not just in Brisbane but all of Queensland! Thank you Miss Ballard for your coaching and Mr Little for getting our girls there and back home safely.

Sports Awards Assembly
Sports Awards has always been an important event at Caboolture SHS. Although this year’s awards event was different compared to previous years, we as a school were proud of being able to recognise the wonderful individual and team achievements throughout the year. Photos of recipients may be found on Caboolture SHS Facebook page.
A complete list of awards presented at the assembly can be found here.
Student Coach and Coach of 2020
Every year, Caboolture SHS recognises excellence in coaching. By doing so we recognise one staff coach and student coach for this prestigious award. Ms Renee Rose coached our Senior Netball girls to be a dominant force in North Brisbane by beating out the entire district and eventually placing 3rd in Brisbane. Student coach of the year honours belong to Alyssa Duncan who helped Ms Donaghey and Ms Eather coach both junior netball teams that also placed 3rd in Brisbane. Congratulations to both recipients.
Student Coaches
This year our student coaches played a significant role in the success of our sporting teams across various sports. We recognised Alyssa Duncan as this year’s coach of the year but many more senior leaders demonstrated quality leadership while coaching our junior teams. Here are our student coaches of 2020.
Kayla Anderson:
Kayla has lead the way this year for student coaches in Rugby League and Touch Football. Kayla assisted with the Year 7 Justin Hodges Rugby League and Year 7 – 9 Caboolture Touch Football team that are ranked 1st place in South Districts Interschool.
Grace Giampino:
Grace Giampino demonstrates success off and on the field. On the field she shows why she is our 2020 Senior Sportswoman of the year and off the field she has supported both our year 7-8 Annette Brander Rugby League winners and the Year 10 boys Justin Hodges team.
Brianna Dunbar:
Brianna loves to help anyone and everyone. She has shown great leadership by supporting Mr Window and his Year 9 Justin Hodges Rugby League team. Along with Kayla, Brianna also assisted our Interschool Touch Football team.
Deanna Kelly:
Deanna exemplifies excellence. Deanna represented South Districts in Volleyball and has decided to pass her skills and knowledge of Volleyball to the next generation of junior boys’ volleyball players. Deanna supports Mr Royter and his Year 7 – 9 Volleyball team that are on the hunt for championship glory in Week 6, Term 4.
Joshua Duarte:
Along with Deanna, Joshua coaches our junior boys Volleyball while also refereeing games. Joshua is on his way to solidifying his refereeing qualifications with Volleyball Queensland and there is no better way to learn than to referee interschool games.
Charli Coutts:
Charli is a very energetic individual who motivates her peers and team. Charli supports Ms Donaghey and Ms Eather with their junior girls Netball team.
Gabrielle Jones:
Opening our newly structured Basketball courts this year will most certainly be one of our most memorable events. No student has made more use of this facility than Gabrielle. Gabrielle is first in and last out when practising Basketball. This year, Gabrielle has taken his excellence in work ethic to help guide our junior girls interschool basketball team with Mr Philps.

What a team!
Coming together is a beginning; Keeping together is progress; Working together is success!
Over the weekend of 16-18 October, our junior girls Volleyball team (Year 7s and 8s) travelled to the Gold Coast to compete at the QLD All Schools State Junior Cup. This is the first time Caboolture SHS has entered a team and they certainly proved they deserved to be there! Our team of nine girls, captained by Tienita Robertson (Year 8), coached by Miss Elizabeth Ballard and chaperoned by Mr Chris Little, braved some very early mornings and late nights to play five tough games of volleyball. The girls won four out of their five games, winning their final match to win the Bronze Medallion. More importantly, they showed great dedication by training in the gym every lunchtime and displayed team spirit by encouraging their opponents each match. We are so very proud of their achievements!

Science
As a Science faculty, we have the wonderful opportunity to learn through investigation by conducting experiments. This term is no exception and the practical lessons are plentiful for our budding scientists. Students gain insights at high school through experiments that will often lead to a career in the Science industry. We design tasks to inspire students to consider all the possibilities and avenues influenced by science and innovation. To encourage this curiosity, students also have the ability to join our Lunchtime Legends program to participate in hands-on STEAM related activities. If you are interested in joining the Lunchtime Legends, please see Mr Pretorius.
In Year 9, students are currently learning about the characteristics of chemical reactions and combustible materials. In the attached image, students are seen investigating reactions between acids and metals.

Our Year 10 students are discovering the future endeavours of organisations from around the world, investigating living on Mars. Part of their investigation includes looking at sustainable food sources. Mr Newton investigated with students the possibility of chickens as a sustainable source of food on Mars.

School Safety
Earlier this year, Moreton Bay Regional Council changed the speed limit on McKean Street between Manley and Pettigrew Streets to 40km/h all day, every day.
Caboolture State High School students walking or riding to and from school should know that there is the new lowered speed limit on McKean Street and offer some safety tips when travelling to and from school.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads have conducted some work recently on McKean Street for the safety of pedestrians around this area – Walk with the Chalk.
Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) Local Laws Unit undertakes a Proactive School Patrol Program where officers complete scheduled school patrols, both in the morning and afternoon, to ensure that vehicles are parked in a safe and lawful manner. The primary aim of the program is to partner with schools across the region to ensure that students and family members/caregivers are able to safely move around the school area as part of dropping off or picking up students from the school.
The Moreton Bay Regional Council Local Law No.5 (Parking) 2011 and Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1999 control parking or stopping of vehicles on footpaths, bicycle paths, shared paths, dividing strips or nature strips. Council is legally required to enforce these controls and the Proactive School Patrol Program forms part of this process. Drivers are reminded that footpaths and nature strips are in place to promote pedestrian movement in a safe manner along roadsides and that drivers and residents must not stop on a bicycle path, shared path, dividing strip or nature strip. Please note that vehicles that are parked with two wheels up and two wheels down is not considered as a lawful parking practice.
Local Laws officers have fact sheets and other relevant information that is provided to drivers to assist with education surrounding safe parking in school zones. Enforcement through the issuance of Penalty Infringement Notices is carefully considered as part of each Proactive School Patrol.
Visit at the link below for further guidance on parking restrictions.

For any further information, members of the School community are welcome to contact Mr Bradley Foley, Local Laws Coordinator on 3205 0555.
